Native animals find homes through help of
the Austin Nature & Science Center.
by Kailyn B.
Martha, a coyote, arrived at the Austin Nature & Science Center (ANSC) in May of 1999 at the age of two. A friendly rancher found her orphaned in west Texas when she was just an eyes-closed pup. He raised her to maturity and taught her to herd cattle and play with the family dogs. After moving to Houston, the owner realized that Martha was causing a stir with the neighbors. He decided to find her a safe and permanent home that would be in her best interest.
Conan, a bobcat, arrived in March of 2003 at the age of six. He was a pet that was born in captivity. He came to the ANSC with his front paws de-clawed making it impossible to release him into the wild. He enjoyed living both indoors and outdoors with his previous owner. The latter decided to find a permanent home more suitable to the cat’s needs. Conan goes to a high point at the ANSC during the mornings when the cage keeper’s are cleaning. He returns to a low edge of the rocks during the afternoon to greet visitors.
The Austin Nature & Science Center, located on the western edge of Zilker Park,is dedicated to the exploration of the natural world. Since 1960, ANSC has provided nature exhibits, education programs, and recreation resources.
