Poodle skirts, slicked back hair, and yummy malts-- the 50’s definitely was a simpler time period. One of the best retro restaurants here in Austin was built just a couple of years ago. Steak 'n Shake, the 50’s themed diner, is arguably one of the best hamburger joints in the area. We are hoping to hit some of the best hamburger eateries in Austin as we continue our Dining Out series.
Our news staff met on Friday, April 12, to find out if this diner was as good as its reputation. Michelle (8), Brandon (8), Mai-Lan (8), Kaitlin (7) and Mrs. Dowd met to eat and critique. You seat yourself at a booth or table complete with checkerboard tableclothes. A welcoming waiter or waitress takes your drink orders. The staff at the Round Rock location near IKEA was courteous and friendly.
You can order soft drinks, water or lemonade, along with the famous shakes. Channeling the 50’s influence, the shakes are served like a malt straight from the movie Grease. Piled high with whip cream, and topped with a perfect cherry, these shakes are amazing.Varieties include the Butterfinger, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Mint Chocolate Chip shakes! You can also order the side by side shake meaning you can choose any two of their flavors as a combo shake. With so many options, the side by side shake is the perfect choice for anyone who can’t make up their mind.
“The Butterfinger shake was the best ever! It had big chunks of Butterfinger mixed in it and on top,” a newspaper staff parent said.
The menu is full of different steakburger entrees. You can choose the classic single, double or triple.with or without cheese and include any or all the condiments--such as tomatoes, lettuce, pickles and onions. If you want to be daring try the Chipotle or Guacamole steakburger.
If you’re not in the mood for a hamburger, don’t worry! Steak 'n Shake has many other mouthwatering options. The chicken tenders are delicious so the steak burgers aren’t the only “to-die-for” option on the menu. You can also order a salad or chicken sandwich. Each burger comes with a pile of crispy, thin fries.
“Steak 'n Shake fries are among the best I've eaten,” Kaitlin (7) commented.
At Steak 'n Shake, the cashier makes the bill easy to read. The receipt shows how much each person's total is and this comes in helpful with large groups. The prices are reasonable with entrees under $5 per person and the newspaper staff's meals averaged around $8 (including shakes).
Steak 'n Shake is definitely a one of a kind restaurant. With its 50’s theme, this friendly diner is a great place to eat. The service is good, the people are nice and the food is delicious. Another perk includes happy hour from 2pm-4pm and 2am-4am when all the soft drinks and shakes are half price. Steak 'n Shake is most definitely a family restaurant.
