View Ohio State vs Illinois clips

by Austin, sports columnist

Buckeye fans were disappointed after the loss to USC. It was the game that would earn Ohio State and the big ten national respect. A win would show the pollsters that the Buckeyes can play with the big teams. But I believe the loss to USC was just what they needed to get motivated. Since the Trojans beat Ohio State 18-15 on a late touchdown run, the Bucks haven’t allowed a touchdown in two straight games.

Since then the Buckeyes shutdown a high scoring Toledo offense 38-0, who the week before put up 54 points on a very respectable Colorado Buffalos team. Then came the fight for the Illibuck Trophy. Many people overlook this rivalry, but there was a bit of trash talking at mid-field before kick-off. Aside from a torrential down pour in Columbus, Illini quarterback Juice Williams had other things to worry about, like the OSU defense. At the end of the day the blitzing Buckeye D-line forced 3 picks (one by defensive end Lawrence Wilson) and 7 sacks, eventually winning 30-0.

It was the first time since 1996 that the Buckeyes forced two straight shutouts. Now many bloggers and analyst are saying that the Buckeyes defense is better than the 2002 national championship team. That’s a strong statement considering how good that 14-0 season was for the defense and the whole team. Lee Corso from College Gameday said “ Jim Tressel (Ohio State head coach) has the best d-line in the country and maybe the best defense too.” This statement was made prior to the Illinois game,

After a solid effort in the Big Ten Opener the Buckeyes rank 7th in the nation in total defense. Since the USC game Ohio State’s defense has only allowed 274 yards passing in two games against two high powered passing offenses. Even against the Trojans I saw life on the D-line. Many people said the USC O-line was the best in the country, and Cameron Heyward and Thaddeus Gipson were putting pressure on QB Matt Barkely to make ill-advised throws.

Last week Ohio State beat the Indiana Hoosiers 33-14. On paper this doesn’t look that great, but if you watched the game you would have realized that the Bucks didn’t just dominate defensively they got the job done on offense too. Terrelle Pryor and Brandon Saine dominated on offense racking up thirty first downs. The Hoosiers made a touchdown on a good second effort by Tandon Doss. The Hoosiers scored on another passing touchdown as time expired in the fourth quarter.

Terrelle Pryor touchdown . One analyst said, “Wisconsin’s O-line and running back John Clay know how to score touchdowns, but when the Ohio Statess defensive ends and linebackers are lined up, the Badgers won’t score easily.”

Lady Jags Sports

View's better on our side

by Paige, sports writer and photographer

On September 24 the Lady Jags 7th grade volleyball teams played the pulverous Ridgeview Panthers!

Kara (7) #50 and on the A team commented before the game, “We beat them in the tournament, so we’ll see if we can beat them tonight.’’

The B team played first. The Panthers were in the lead for the first couple of serves, but the Jags caught up. The plays caused the crowd to go wild. The Panthers won the first game 25-22.

“The game is intense and competitive but we can only hope for the best,” Julie (7) said.

During the second game the Panthers started off with a lead. But, the Jags came head! Great serves and excellent passes kept the Jags ahead. The score ended 22-25 with Jags winning. Becca (7) made the winning serve

“I didn’t think I could do it! It’s really exciting and I’m really happy!” Becca said.

The two teams now had to play a third game. The Lady Jags took an 11 point lead! The Panthers caught up. The score was 17-24 with Ridgeview in the lead. Our girls were shaking in their shorts. Sweat was dripping down their faces. Each one was thinking they had to make this game a win.Ridgeview served and we returned. The ball landed in our court and the Panthers scored. The final score for the last game ended with a Panther win 18-25.

Addie (7) said, “It stinks, but we’ll do better next time.”

Sometimes the view on the court is not what it seems in the stands. The fans sometimes do not realize the pressure the girls put on themselves to win. It’s the comradery that makes the Lady Jags winners on and off the court. The coaches and players practice almost every day and play their hearts out to win.
